Groups in the Ouray Ice Park

New Group Use Policies for 2008/2009

Fellow climbers, users of the Ouray Ice Park, guides and commercial/noncommercial groups of any type (school, college, club, govt. agency, etc.):

Over the past several years we have noticed increased usage of the Park on weekends, overcrowding and in some cases blatant disregard for the rules posted concerning usage of the Uncompahgre Gorge Recreational Use Area (UGRUA).

As the manager of the Ouray Ice Park, the Ouray Ice Park Inc. is required by the Ouray County Commissioners and UGRUA to promptly address any issues brought to their attention involving violations of the Park’s Rules and Regs. As such, the following policies will be implemented beginning December 15, 2008.

  1. All groups (e.g., educational institution, climbing club, government agency, guided groups operating within the Concessionaire Agreement, etc.) planning to use the Ouray Ice Park are required to fill out the Group usage form available on this web page.
  2. All groups using the Ouray Ice Park must also register at one of 3 new registrations boxes placed at the 3 common entrances to the Ouray Ice Park.
  3. All groups and Commercial Guide services will be Issued color coded tags to place on their climbing anchors readily identifying them as a “Guide, Club, School, etc.” These tags will be provided to these users by either San Juan Mountain Guides (Concessionaire for all guiding in the Park) or by Ouray Ice Park, Inc.. These tags will be color coded so that the general public may easily identify the different group users of the Park.
  4. Groups must follow all rules posted on signs at the 3 entrances to the Ouray Ice Park, which will inform non recognized groups of what they need to do in order to use the Park.
  5. Groups may not occupy more than four climbing routes in any one specific area. (i.e. Schoolroom, New Funtier, South Park )
  6. The maximum amount of time a group may occupy any one route is 3 hours.
  7. No unattended fixed top-rope lines are allowed at any time.
  8. All groups will be required to follow and sign a “Agree to Abide by OIP Rules and Regulation Document” the Ouray Ice Park Rules and Regulations regarding anchor usage, safety, etc., and sign a “Agree to Abide by OIP Rules and Regulation” document. Users found violating these rules may be asked to leave the Park.
  9. Ice Park Staff will be actively touring through the Park and parking lots attempting to identify groups and non-licensed guides operating in the UGRUA.

These policies have been implemented for the safety and enjoyment of all Park users. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Ouray Ice Park office. Thank you and climb on!
